Multiple authorities are responding to an active shooter situation inside the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campuses. Reports of multiple shots fired and at least three individuals have been injured possibly more but the exact numbers are unknown. The campus is currently on lockdown as police search for an Asian male. An alert message has been issued - warning of an armed and dangerous individual on or near campus.
The primary goal of the alert was to ensure the safety of the campus community by advising everyone to seek shelter indoors and refrain from approaching windows. The initial alert was disseminated shortly after 1 p.m., while updates continued to be shared on X (previously known as Twitter) at 1:50 p.m., reiterating the ongoing shelter-in-place order and emphasizing that the situation was still unfolding. Approximately 40 minutes later, a subsequent post was published by the university, firmly reiterating the necessity to remain inside and highlighting that the suspect was still at large.
