According to a poll released on Thursday, President Joe Biden's approval rating has hit 39%. This comes as more than two-thirds of Democrats express their desire for a different candidate to run for the White House in 2024. The survey, conducted by the polling firm SSRS for CNN, also reveals that five out of the top seven Republican candidates would defeat Biden in the 2024 general election.
Breaking down the numbers, Biden's job approval rating is at 39%, marking the second lowest under an SSRS survey. It is only slightly higher than his 38% approval rating during the summer of 2022, a period characterized by highest inflation in four decades. Among Republicans, his approval rating stands at a mere 6%, while it is at 36% among independents. However, his approval remains strong among Democrats, with a notable 74% showing support.
The poll further indicates that 67% of Democrats favor a different candidate as the party's 2024 nominee, demonstrating a divided sentiment within the party itself. In a hypothetical matchup, if the 2024 election were held today, the poll suggests that former President Donald Trump would defeat Biden by a narrow margin of 47% to 46%. Additional matchups also resulted in a victory for Trump, with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley leading by 6%, former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott both ahead by 2%, and former New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie enjoying a 2% advantage.
However, it is worth noting that the only candidates potentially facing challenges when pitted against Biden are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. They both polled behind Trump and lost marginally to Biden, with DeSantis tied at 47% and Ramaswamy defeated by a slim margin of 46% to 45%.
The survey was conducted between August 25-31, 2023, and involved 1,503 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the poll is 3.5%.
